How to enable internet on iPhone in India with Airtel

1. Get an Airtel prepaid connection. This was the first thing of course. I got a prepaid connection. I didn’t ask about any data plan or anything else; just got a simple connection and activated it.

2. Activate GPRS: After getting the connection I activated GPRS by dialling this number: *567*2# — and following the instructions. The instructions were mainly about which plan you want to chose etc. The whole process takes about 5 minutes for you to go through, and I think Airtel activated GPRS in about an hour or so.

3. Reset Network Settings: After activating GPRS, — I waited a night before doing anything else. I was told by someone who used the service earlier – that Airtel sends you setting details – that are needed before you can go online. While this might be true a few years earlier or perhaps on some other phone models, — this is not necessary on the iPhone 3G.

But, you do have to reset your network settings on the iPhone before it can access the internet, and I got that tip from the comments on this post.

Here is how to do that:

1. Go to Settings à General à Reset à Reset Network Settings

The system will prompt you with an ugly red button which says “Reset Network Settings”, and on top it says “This will delete all network settings, returning them to factory defaults”

This concerned me a little bit because frankly I do not know what this actually does. All I know is that I hit the button and the iPhone restarted.

When it loaded up the next time, a little “E” appeared next to “Airtel” on the top left on the screen, and internet started working for me!

I have used it for about a day and so far everything looks fine. At the end of it all, the process was fairly simple and straightforward, and the speed is quite decent too. The apps work fine, and I had to just turn on “Location Services” in Settings  General à Location Services to work with the maps app. Everything else worked on its own, and I hope it works for you too!

[How To] Enable GPRS/EDGE/APN Settings In Jailbroken iPhone 3GS

 

I have recently jailbroken an iPhone I got from AT&T USA and brought it to India. In India I inserted an AirTel SIM in my Apple iPhone but the GPRS was not working. The GPRS settings are generally found in “Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network” screen as seen below



But this option was missing on my iPhone 3GS. This was missing because the apple restricts the settings editing from user. In this article I will share three methods of changing the GPRS APN settings when the option is missing.

 

Fix:

There are three methods, one through browser, one through a cydia app and other through file editing. I will explain all three in this article.

 

First of all, find your manual GPRS settings from your service provider or carrier. You can also find Free GPRS settings for India here.

 

Change iPhone APN Settings Through Safari Browser [Quick and Easy Way]

 

 

1. Connect your iPhone to some wifi/wireless network which can give your iPhone Internet access.

2. From your iPhone Safari browser, open the website : unlockit.co.nz and click Continue



3. Click on Custom APN



4. Type the APN settings for your carrier, in my case, it was airtelgprs.comand click on create profile.



5. Save the profile and re-start your iPhone. Your phone should now be working with the GPRS settings.

 

For this you can download the app called “APN Editing”



This app should work on iPhone 2G/3G, not sure of 3GS, because it did not install on my 3GS. If this application installs on your phone, its good, else see the method below.

 

Enable Cellular Data Network Settings Though File Editing [Geek Method]

 

 

 

1. Download and Install OpenSSH app from Cedia



2. Download and Install WinSCP client for Windows. Run the client and connect to your iPhone using SFTP over the wifi network. The Host Name will be IP address visible in

“Settings > General > Wifi > <Network Name>”

username will be “root”

password will be “alpine” for iPhone 3Gs



3. Browse to the following location on the WinSCP client

“/System/Library/Carrier Bundles/<carrier name>” and copy the “carrier.plist” file from this folder. carrier name is the folder name that depends on which carrier you are using. For example, in my case, it was Airtel India, so the path is:

/System/Library/Carrier Bundles/BhartiAirtel_in.bundle



4. Download and run pledit software and open the file “carrier.plist” downloaded in above step with pledit editor

and paste the following code just after the “<dict>” tag in this file:

<key>AllowEDGEEditing</key>
<true/>

 

Save the file after making changes as seen below.



 

5. Copy the Saved file back to the same folder in the iPhone. Restart the iPhone and the settings will be enabled.

 

After all this research, I got my GPRS working, see the proof below

To Configure your Apple Iphone for Airtel GPRS follow this steps.
First Activate your mobile office, Either Pay as you go plan or
subscribe to any monthly data plan like 98 rs for 30 days.
After subscribing open your Iphone Menu and go to
Settings >> General >> Network >> EDGE or GPRS >> Press ENTER

Now fill out This settings:

Username: blank ( Don't fill any thing )
Password: blank ( Don't fill any thing )

1. First Activate your GPRS Plan
2. In your blackberry Press the menu key
3. Goto options >> select advanced options >> select TCP.

5. username and password are blank so leave them.
6. That's all, Now just press the menu key and save it.

Airtel GPRS/ EDGE/ 3G Settings for Android (India)

 

OK so this is coming a little late in the day, nevertheless its going to help a lot of you’ll out there.  Got your all new shiny android right now, but no 2G/3G working? Here’s the simple tip to enable it.

To have an internet connection on your phone, you must have it enabled on your card first. To enable it check out local schemes from your retailer and enable it. I have a 2G plan, Rs. 98/month for 2GB.

In most cases, once the above step is done, a ‘E’ symbol representing Edge,  or ‘G’ representing GPRS or ’3G’ representing well, 3G will appear on your notification bar. So you’re good to go. If not continue on then.

The 3G icon in the notification bar indicates 3G is enabled.

Open up Settings => Wireless and Networks => Mobile Networks => Access Point Names (or something similar, it differs on each phone. You just need to find where you can put in an Access Point Name or APN.) Once you reach here, create a new Access Point Name (or modify the existing one, your choice) and put in the following details exactly:

• Name: Airtel


• APN: airtelgprs.com


• APN Type: Internet

That’s it nothing else. Save it, enable it, restart phone. The net should be active by now. Still no? Continue on.

Well at this state you probably might have started repenting your Big Switch from Nokia to Android , but don’t worry I too had to go through all these steps.

But your final alternative unfortunately is to call up the support center @ 121. A better alternative however would be to mail their support desk @ 121@in.airtel.com. My experience with them definitely calls for the email support over the phone.
